Discipline of Propriety - Chapter 8 from disciplines of a Godly women

This topic is obviously intended for "women" but i think it still in its own ways has relevance for men(in terms of attitudes in our heart towards these matters although in most cases more of a problem for the females!). This book defines propriety as "characterised by appropriateness and suitability" and this to Paul's words, "Whatever happens conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel" and also 1 Tim 2:9-14. In this chapter it focuses the appropriateness on three things our words, appearance and our attitudes. The root of the three is from the heart. Yet "the heart is deceitful above all things, who can understand it. it is beyond cure." Jer 17:9 Submission to God's word will begin at the heart, Hebrew 4:12, although with it brings much pain and sufferings! I am writing this up knowing full well I can, am and will be caught up with sin and hopes that this will help us think through these things with God and Jesus in mind when it arises in our lives!
Appearance:
For me, I personally think that this point is rather important, for most girls dressing has always been important. As i remember when I was a little girl, wearing anything OTHER than a dress meant that I was going to throw a tantrum for about 10 mins to my nanny because "a girl doesnt wear jeans according to me". So thinking back and up till now, whether it is the world or our own nature girls care about what they wear! The questions that this book raises is who are we dressings for? to please ourselves? To dress for power, beauty or sophistication? No, rather we should dress to please God. That is a point I have not though of until now (how sad!). How should a woman dresss to please God?
Modesty + strength + dignity =){1 tim 2:9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.)
Modesty
- the writer points out it isn't to dress ugly-like but modesty with deceny which she defines as synonymous to chaste: "chaste primary implies a refraining from acts or even thoughts of desires that are not virginal or not sanctioned by marriage vows". Basically dont dress in a way that promotes sensuality. And it can be hard these days to dress in that way, though i think most of us dress quite modestly =).
Strength + dignity
- Proverbs 31:25
- strength and dignity doesn't come from our appearance but it is from God! Dressing to honor God and carry ourselves with assurance knowing we are God's child. 1 Peter 3:3-4
Words:
Girls love to talk ! When boys share experiences like gaming or playing sport, although girls enjoy that it isn't the same as having a chat over coffee or dinner ! So what should we be careful of? Not to be malicious talkers, gossip, flattery, criticism and diminishment. 1 Tim 3 : 11 In the same way, their wives[b] are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
- gossip and flattery : "gossip is saying behind a person's back what you would never say to her face. flattery is saying to a person's face what you would never say to her back."
Proverbs 12:18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
- criticism & diminishment: speaking down against someone else James 4:11
Sums it up with Jesus's words about the heart and words Matthew 12:33-37 {put yout mouse over it to read the passage)
Attitude:
"Allowing God's words to assess the thoughts and attitudes of our heats is difficult indeed. It is painful. Some of you may be relising that your heart is sick and that you have never found the magic potion to heal it. No matter how hard you try you can not do the things you ought to do or even what you want to do. This heart condition is called sin. Many good church women try to "be good" without ever truly being converted, they never get a new heart that is inclined to do good. You can develop a refined external civility but it is impossible to change th sources of the problem you heart. Only God in Christ can do that and praise God he is willing." - direct quote from the book
Psalm 119:9-16
Psalm 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I think im doing pretty good
Gary — Wed, 15/07/2009 - 00:51I think im doing pretty good with the dress modestly area :P, but pretty sure that was targetted @ women only.
However I guess as guys, should have the attitude that extends to dressing with an attitude to please God...wonder what that means for me...
One of the most helpful
Vivian — Wed, 15/07/2009 - 10:13One of the most helpful thigns I ever read in terms of dress was not being a stumbling block, which applies to both girls and guys. Like for girls if what you wear is revealing, it could be a stumbling block for our brothers. Or if you are someone who likes brand names and etc and you keep dressing dcorated by these, you could be a stumbling block to your sisters, in that it may cause them jealousy or something along those lines.
I'm not sure about the exact implicatiuons for guys, but showering could be helpful =P
hehe speaking of clothes do
Felix — Wed, 15/07/2009 - 12:07hehe speaking of clothes do i still dress 'gangsta'

wei — Sat, 18/07/2009 - 23:33hey alice =) thanks for the post i haven't started reading the book yet.. still piled under PTC and "Love and Respect" but it sounds like an eye-opener. i've definately never saw dressing as something that was for God to be honest but i can't wait to find out more and thanks for the bible verses. they were really helpful!
Tracy: haha i know what you mean.. but rejoice because even though people think you're a nut for reading a book like that it shows you stand out (in a good but weird way) and that is what we're called to do as God's elect =)
